EVE Blog Banter #1 – Going For A Stroll Through EVE

In Conclusion…

There are those in the tinfoil hat brigade who believe Ambulation to be merely a testbed for the engine that will run the World of Darkness game and that it will just be window dressing on an already gorgeous game. These conspiracy theorists may feel that if this is the case then CCP is not going to make as much of it as they could. I hope they are wrong. There are those who are skeptical and have stated that they will never use the new interface, stating a variety of reasons most of which revolve around EVE becoming a 2nd Life or WoW clone. EVE will never become either of these things, mainly because it is the players that make the game, CCP just give us the tools to do it.

Both of these camps are indicative of the very human trait of fearing change and the new. If EVE is to last (and I believe that it will be here for a long time to come) it needs more than just a ship floating in space to expand. It needs unique environments, discernible from each other in their details but recognizably similar in their themes. It needs unique people, which are part of the scenery and add to the atmosphere of the universe. It needs new avenues through which players can interact through conversation, trade and combat. Most of all it needs a way for players to connect more emotionally with the world and what better way to do that than to be able to see the expression on an avatar’s face when you talk to them.

Ambulation is such a paradigm shift for EVE that no matter what we might expect from it we’re quite often going to be dead wrong. Who knows what kind of things players will get up to once released from the confines of their pods? Personally I’d settle for a little bar on an out of the way station, where I know my regulars and can make a modest profit. A kind of space age Cheers if you will. Give me that and I’ll be happy. That and boarding actions.

  • It will be interesting to see what shows up on the "Phase II" list after ambulation is implemented and has had a chance to get the initial kinks worked out.
