Hilmar Speaks at CGDC

Hilmar Petursson, CEO of CCP, will be giving the keynote at the Chinese Game Developers Conference which runs from July 30th to August 1st. The Talk will be titled ‘Dare to be Different’ and will cover CCP’s history as well as (according to the EVE Online Newsletter) “… the never-revealed grand picture for CCP’s future.”

Will this talk put the recent dramas over Zulu’s blog and the CSM summit minutes in perspective, or will it merely serve to demonstrate that CCP really are out of touch with EVE players? We’ll just have to wait and find out. I really hope there’ll be a video available of it.

My guess is that it will do both. CCP seems to have a strategy to work on multiple games, perhaps even multiple console games. EVE players would prefer all efforts on EVE.
EVE is a complicated and unfriendly place, especially for newcomers. This makes for a great niche game, but a lousy vehicle to grow revenue. Diversification seems inevitable. The calls to make EVE more 0.0, more PVP and little effort on PVE or NPE just exacerbate this.

Best bet: He will use corporate jargon that will be wildly misinterpreted to mean specific things that a.) will anger some immediately, launching an internet shitstorm and b.) will get some excited because they interpret it to mean something it is not and months down the line when those “promises” are not fulfilled will lead to an internet shitstorm.
