BattleClinic recently caught up with CCP’s Halldór Fannar Guðjónsson (CTO) and Gabe Mahoney (VP Engineering) at GDC and cornered them for an interview.
This is not news, developers are interviewed by websites all the time, especially at conferences. What is news is the following:
Gabe:
The other feature that we haven’t seen a ton of yet is the Epic mission arcs…and they’re huge! But what people may not realize is that we put a huge investment into the toolset that allows players to build these. So what you’re getting in Apocrypha and future updates are graphical tools that will allow content developers to build fun, immersive and complex stories easily. It will be easy–drag and drop–and although you haven’t seen a lot of it yet, it will just amaze you at how easily it’s going to be create these fascinating story lines.
Yes, you read that right, the toolset built by CCP to put together the Epic Mission Arcs will be available to the players. There are going to be incredibly talented and creative people who play EVE building mission arcs, not just CCP. The scope of this is immense.
Will we be able to build PvP into these mission arcs? I can see the majority of them being of the “kill 10 members of this corp/alliance” type but I’m sure someone out there with a little creativity and skill could put together a decent arc which involves PvP. The possibilities are mind boggling (as my workload will be if I’m to fulfill my goal of writing guides for every arc)
Of course this feature is still coming Soon™, and it could be a massive flop with EVE being flooded with shoddy arcs (not everyone has the skill to put a decent one of these together, I know I don’t). But once more EVE has caught me up in imagining the possibilities. Which is what it was always best at.
Till next time, fly safe and good hunting.
