As you will have probably gathered from all of the above, some new ships are going to have to be developed to make it possible to mount these assaults.
The assault shuttle is the most obvious, a fast and manouverable variation on current shuttles, it would carry a squad into battle either landing in a captured docking bay (which would mean it could be re-used) or punching directly through the hull and doing some damage whilst it delivered its troops (destroying the shuttle in the process).
As a variation on the assault shuttle, the combat support shuttle would provide a means of respawning on the target without having to capture the cloning facility, as such it would have to dock and be unable to punch through the hull. It may also be a means of conducting electronic warfare within the target by hacking various systems, slowing down the defenders respawn times or causing other mischief.
The Assault carrier would either be a variation on the existing carrier chassis, optimized for producing cannon fodder clones and launching assault shuttles rather than fighters, or be a standard carrier fitted with specialised assault modules There is also the possibility of having small manufacturing modules producing the weapons and equipment needed by the troops. There is also the possibility of using variations on the dreadnought hull as assault support ships, providing EWar cover and artillery support.
6. The Logistics of a Siege/Assault
As it stands at the moment, as I understand it, the taking of an outpost requires a lengthy bombardment by siege weapons, missiles and torpedoes. All that’s required for this to go on till the station falls is a supply of ammunition. An extended assault however may require more than this.
Transports will be required to bring in the various resources required to run the high volume cloning facilities and possibly resupply with assault shuttles. As such many strategists will look to get an assault over as quickly as possible or they run the risk of having to defend supply lines and that adds a whole new set of headaches to the equation. Getting an assault over and done with as quickly as possible should be more costly in terms of resources and equipment, not to mention clones, than an extended bombardment/seige, but each individual item should be quite cheap.
