The World’s Voice

This is a response to the many calls for regulation to be imposed upon the blogosphere, from government and from shameless self-publicists.
I am the voice of the internet.
I speak of many things.
I speak of the highest ideals, and the lowest depravities.
I talk for the just, the rich, the poor, and to the lost.
The man who sold his soul and wrote a book about it.
The many who preach against him.
The religious, the rational, the entertainers, and the theives.
I am their voice.
Those who would be free and those who would enslave.
Those who wish to buy and those who wish to sell.
Those who aim for heaven and those who live in hell.
I speak for them.
I trick you with false promises.
I comfort those in need.
I threaten you with violence.
I would do all these things.
I contradict myself, and change my face
I speak the truth and lie in the same breath.
I beg for forgiveness and make judgements all at once.
I say many things, and mean none of them.
The darkest reaches of man’s desires,
are reflected in my heart.
As they are in yours.
I plumb those depths without fear.
I do everything you do.
I say everything you say.
I am a mirror for your soul.
I am only what you make me.
I am the voice of the internet.
I speak of human things.
I am neither good nor evil,
But somewhere in between.
My voice is your voice.
You cannot silence yourself.
You cannot undream a dream.
This voice is human.
The internet is the voice of humanity, and as such will sometimes say things which some don’t like. Those who think that they can control and silence this expression of everything it is to be human, the good and the bad, have alot to learn about what being human means.
Each human person exists in a state of fragile balance between the darker, older, animal parts of their brain and the younger more rational areas. The internet, because it expresses all these things, may be the key to understanding how to grow beyond our animal past and become something better.
I don’t write this in defence of anything, like the threats and horrible things that it amuses some to bandy about. I merely point out that the internet is becoming more and more the voice of humanity, we all speak through it. To gag some part of it because we don’t like what it says is in effect denying the darker parts of our own souls. We fear the animal part of us, we fear what we might be capable of if we lost all reason.
The existence of this aspect of humanity’s psyche on the internet is not the fault of the internet, neither is it the fault of those who use it. It is a fundamental part of who we are as human beings and is only to be expected. Socially we are still adapting to this new way of communicating, testing boundaries and finding our feet in a new universe of interactions. This process could take years and is best left to happen organically rather than having rules and regulations imposed upon it. We’ll find our own rules, and adapt our behaviour to the situations we find ourselves in, its something we humans are good at.
