Vision of a CyberState…

Questions Without Answers (Yet).
There are many questions which this idea throws up, to list them all would take an age so I’ll just put forward some that have occurred to me as I’ve been writing;
- How to ensure transparency. Tha actions of the civil servants should be visible to all and they should be accountable to the people.
- National Security. This is probably the most pressing question, how to ensure that military and intelligence secrets are not made available to those who would abuse them. Also how much autonomy should the military have? It is obviously not feasible, or even recommended to have every military decision decide by committee.
- How are the judiciary appointed? Someone has to see that the laws enacted by the people are being upheld, and having those involved in enacting also seeing to their enforcement would create a conflict of interest. An independant judiciary is essential in any free society, so this question is at least as important as the last if not more so.
- How to make the transition. How do we get from where we are now with a representative democracy, to the cyberstate? Such a system could be put in place now, with no official recognition, and no actual power. If it were to generate more interest and votes than a general election then , in an ideal world, parliament would have to stand aside as it would have lost its legitimacy. If it was seen that parliament no longer represented the interests of the voting public MP’s would have no choice, having been stripped of their mandate, but to dissolve permanently. This is not, however, an ideal world so the likely hood of it happening is very very slim.
If anyone has suggestions as to how to answer these, and any other, questions comment away.
In Conclusion.
I’m well aware of the shortcomings of this idea but believe it to be one way we can move our system of government out of the stagnant mire of tradition, patronage and apathy that it is currently in, giving power back to the people and removing one level of corruption from our society. The old sytem has had its day and something new and refreshing is needed to get people interested again. The current ‘top-down’ style of government is stripping us of our freedoms and denying us a say in how our country is run, and its not the way our democracy is meant to work anyway. Give the people their voice back and we may surprise even ourselves.
