Why UC2?

This site has been UC2 for a while now, I’d like to address why I changed it from ‘Under Construction’.
I originally started blogging because I’d heard it was the ‘next big thing’ on the interweb and wanted to get in on it. Like many bloggers I started on blogspot and needed to come up with a name for it, something that reflected my interests and said something a little deeper. I chose ‘Under Construction’ because as long as there has been an internet there have been pages which have that phrase plastered all over them, when I first started surfing you couldn’t avoid them. As the technology for building web pages has improved, become more accessible, and easier to use, it has become more of a case of creating content rather than actually having to program the back end and do the design as well. A website can go from not being there to complete and full of content in the blink of an eye. Another thing which has added to the ‘Under Construction’ messages rarity is the fact that companies and individuals looking to build a presence on the web have learned that such messages do nothing for their credibility and to hold back the launch of their sites until everything is ready.
I rationalised my choice of name by reasoning that each of us is continually creating and recreating ourselves from moment to moment, from this I got the idea of relating the construction of my self over time. This was meant to be deep and philosophical, I realise now that it was more than a little pretentious. This goal has been gradually dropped over time and replace with general postings about what I happen to find interesting, funny or irritating at particular moments in time. In short: this blog has no focus, but I’ll be getting to that either later in this post or in a future one.
Back to topic at hand: Why UC2? UC is obviously an abbreviation of ‘Under Construction’ and the 2 is the iteration of the blog that I was on when I changed the name. There is a tagline which goes with the title but this theme doesn’t display it, I’ll be remedying this later on this evening probably, if I don’t get distracted that is. The tagline is “I see it, do you see too?”, get it? The original reason for the abbreviation was because people kept coming to the site who were looking for sites relating to the construction industry, which this patently isn’t. I don’t know anything about construction, apart from the fact that concrete is often involved, and heavy lifting. I don’t do heavy lifting.
I’ve reached a point in my life where I think I’ve got an inkling of where I want to be going, I’m blogging for GamingMoments.net and really enjoying it. I intend to make a serious go of the whole video games journalism thing and plan to blog from the Edinburgh Interactive Festival and possibly GameCity in Nottingham later this year. I reckon I have 3-4 years to build a proper online presence for myself before Arthur goes to school and I can devote myself to blogging full time. I have a lot to learn between now and then, I’d better get on with it eh?
